I agree. I was arguing that I didn't see the motivation for making it
the default approach; I apologize if this came of as "this code should
not see the light of day," which is, as Joe would put it, silly. There
are clearly some cases in which you want it, and so if there's code to
do it, including that code in the core as something optional is a good
idea.
