Cory can no doubt be more detailed but the issue as us 410 people have
observed it on Omega is not that javax.comm doesn't work but that it
doesn't work consistently. A small subset of nodes in the testbed will
disappear with each reboot. Perhaps more frustratingly, on any given
run certain people can usefully connect with either Sun's javax.comm
(patched with RxTx), or IBM's, but not both -- and there is no obvious
pattern to why yet.
So FC3 may work... or it may be working for you, at the moment :P.
I don't think its necessarily practical to expect people to use 2.4.
But we should consider recommending it anyway until we've got a handle
on the bug(s).
