So how bad is the situation with msp430-gcc?  Do we see this port 
improving in necessary ways?  Does msp430 appear to have a bright future 
as a sensornet platform?

Depending on the answers to these, it might eventually be reasonable to 
look into for example creating an msp430 backend for LLVM.  I've been 
spending a fair amount of time with LLVM lately and I believe that this 
would not be too difficult, probably 1-2 months work.
