Yes, using a recent snapshot from http://sdcc.sourceforge.net/snap.php
is recommended over using the released 2.5.0.
The release of 2.6.0 should be close. It is planned for Q2 2006
but this is probably a little optimistic.
Code generation of the current snapshots for the 8051 should be
very close to the to be released version.
(The newly introduced PIC16 port is expected to see more changes.)

I cannot (and so probably should not:) comment on this for NesC or TinyOS.
