[Tinyos-alliance] TTX update

David,

Scott Brenner (sob at harvard.edu) is one of the key folks at the IETF who
deals with their legal and IP issues, and authored the two RFCs laying
out the IETF's policies for IP. He is a good resource and would be
willing to participate on a conference call if you would find that
useful.

I am curious to understand in what ways the IETF's policy is viewed as
naive (I think you mentioned this in one of the meetings). As I
understand it, the policy says that companies need to state their
relevant IP so that working groups can take it into consideration when
crafting standards. The IETF suggests, but does not dictate, that
companies should accompany contributions with no-fee licenses for any
relevant IP. Patent infringement issues are then the concern of those
implementing IETF standards, not the IETF itself (if I understand things
correctly). The IETF does not guarantee that infringement cannot occur,
especially since third parties might have IP rights in an IETF standard.
If this works in practice, it sounds reasonable to me.

Unfortunately, the regular meeting time overlaps with my class this
semester, so unless we find another time (probably difficult!) I can't
join in for the next few months.

Matt
