I'm sorry to report that this is due to a workaround of a kernel bug
in usb serial drivers (see comments in buggyread). While the kernel
bug may have been fixed (doesn't seem to happen on my machine right
now, and I can't remember which version it applied to), I'm reticent
to remove it.
