Postdoctoral Fellowship in Volcano Monitoring Sensor Networks

Applications are sought for a new postdoctoral fellowship position
being offered by WSU and Harvard in the area of wireless sensor
networks for volcano monitoring. We are collaborating to develop
platforms that involve real-time data collection of seismic, acoustic,
and GPS data from a network of wireless sensors deployed on an active
volcano. This project requires a tight integration of computer science
and domain science expertise, including novel techniques for data
collection, time synchronization, medium access control, multihop
networking, and real-time data processing. In collaboration with the
USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) and NASA JPL, we are planning
to deploy a prototype network at Mount St. Helens, Washington, in the
coming year.

This postdoctoral fellowship provides an opportunity to engage with an
emerging research area involving wireless sensor networks and
volcanology, to work with two university teams as well as researchers
at CVO and JPL, gain real-world sensor network deployment experience,
and build a strong publication record. We are seeking highly qualified
applicants with a background in wireless sensor networks, wireless
networking, embedded systems, and distributed systems, with a strong
preference for applicants with previous experience building
TinyOS-based sensor network solutions. Applicants should hold (or will
obtain within six months of application) a Ph.D in Computer Science,
Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

This fellowship is for one year with the possibility of renewal for a
second year. The fellowship provides an annual stipend of $50,000 plus
health benefits. Fellows will expect to lead the software development
team of the OASIS project and spend time at both WSU in Vancouver, WA
and Harvard in Cambridge, MA, supplemented by several shorter trips 
as needed. Travel costs will be covered by the fellowship.
