I don't have much to add to this discussion, but I agree leaving it up 
to the user via the Makefile in one app seems better and is also easier 
to maintain.  As Phil pointed out, the current functionality should be 
the default so no one's confused down the road.  This way the user can 
combine any of these features however they wish.
