If you want to write a program to control the sensor network you can use Java. TinyOS includes several Java programs and communication with the motes using Java is very simple. Take a look at [1], a simple example of how to use a Java program to display data coming from the mots on a PC. Java programs included with TinyOS-1.x are under tinyos-1.x/tools/java

The usual thing to do is connect to the motes by using SerialForwarder, a small Java program that you can run by tyiping 'java net.tinyos.sf.SerialForwarder. Of course, you need to have Java properly installed and have TinyOS java applications compiled. Perhaps this guide [2] will help you. Once SerialForwarder is running, you can connect to SerialForwarder from another Java program and receive and send messages to a mote attached to the PC, just the way many programs under tinyos-1.x/tools/java do.
