[Tinyos-help] attenuation

One of the weak points ( acording to the group i belong to interests ) of
TOSSIM in version 1.x of tinyos was that it didnt simulated attenuation. The
influence area of a mote was determined via bit error rates. In lesson 11 of
the tutorial it explains that

*add(src, dest, gain)*: Add a link from *src* to *dest* with *gain*. When *
src* transmits, *dest* will receive a packet attenuated by the *gain* value.

Does that gain value explain attenuation, or is it based on the same idea of
bit error rate?
