As a note -- Chad Metcalf has written serial forwarder support for  
TOSSIM, which will be in the next release.

Your statement about sensor boards is completely correct. If anybody  
writes drivers, I'm sure core would be happy to put them in the tree,  
but nobody is that psyched about doing it just for good karma.
