I believe the bit in here on how collisions are handled still generally applies,
I'm sure Phil will correct me if I'm wrong.

You may want to look at the source wrt. the current backoff protocol, etc.
(There are also many convenient places to place hooks to see what the
low-level packet simulation is doing.)
