                   International CONET Summer School

SENIOT: FROM SENSOR NETWORKS TO NETWORKED INTELLIGENT OBJECTS

                       July 26 - August 1, 2009
                        BiCi, Bertinoro, Italy
                   www.cooperating-objects.eu/school

                  ------------------------------------
                   Application Deadline: May 15, 2009
                  ------------------------------------

THEME -- As processors, sensors, and wireless radios are becoming
extremely small and inexpensive, we can foresee a world where
everyday objects are globally networked and physical environments are
enriched by computational power. Enabling technologies for a smart
world such as sensor networks and smart objects have received much
attention from researchers in recent times, and first prototypes of
  such systems are being deployed.

GOALS AND AUDIENCE -- The goal of the summer school is to survey
fundamentals of sensor networks and networked intelligent objects,
as well as to identify novel opportunities and research directions
in these areas through a series of lectures by international
experts. Participants can experience the relevant technologies
during hands-on courses and can present their own work during a
participants' workshop. The school will provide a good opportunity
to get to know other people working in the field, to meet
distinguished scholars, and to establish contacts that may lead to
research collaborations in the future. We expect about 60
participants - the intended audience are post-graduate students, PhD
students, and young researchers from universities and industrial
  laboratories around the world.

  LECTURERS AND TOPICS
  - Andrew T. Campbell (Dartmouth) -- Urban sensing
  - Adam Dunkels (SICS) -- Operating systems and IP-based sensor
    networks, including full-day hands-on course
  - Aman Kansal (Microsoft Research) -- Sensor webs and maps,
    including hands-on course
  - Stamatis Karnouskos (SAP Research) -- Future enterprises based on
    real-world services
  - Koen Langendoen (TU Delft) - MAC and localization for sensor
    networks
  - Paul Lukowicz (U Passau) - Wearable sensing
  - Pedro Marron (U Bonn) - Cooperating objects
  - Friedemann Mattern (ETH Zurich) - Visions of the future
  - Shashi Prabh (Polytechnic Institute of Porto) - Distributed data
    storage, dissemination and processing
  - Bernhard Rinner (U Klagenfurt) - Distributed smart cameras
  - Kay Roemer (U Lubeck and ETH Zurich) - Time synchronization in
    sensor networks
  - Kamin Whitehouse (U Virginia) - Macroprogramming and debugging of
    sensor networks

LOCATION -- BiCi, the Bertinoro International Centre for
Informatics, is located in the small medieval hilltop town of
Bertinoro in Italy, close to the Adriatic coast and about 50km east
of Bologna from where it can easily be reached. The summer school
takes place in a castle on top of the central peak that has been
converted into a modern conference centre with Internet access.
Participants stay in guestrooms in the fortress and in a nearby
  ancient seminary.

PARTICIPATION -- Prospective participants should apply online
before May 15, 2009 at the summer school website. The number of
participants is limited to a maximum of 60. If we receive more
applications, participants will be selected based on their work area
and background, geographic distribution, and date of application.
Acceptance notifications will be sent end of May. The registration
fee (480 EUR in shared double room, 570 EUR in single room) covers
participation in the summer school, accommodation, all meals and
excursions. CONET provides 15 grants of 480 EUR each for selected
European students, that is, participation for recipients of a grant
is free of charge when sharing a double room.

ORGANIZATION -- The school is directed by Kay Roemer (U Lubeck and
ETH Zurich) and Friedemann Mattern (ETH Zurich) and organized by the
European Network of Excellence CONET. For details see
